On Friday the 21st of June our Summer Solstice 2019 Celebrations took place on Trannish Island and we could not have wished for a more successful event!

What is Summer Solstice?

Summer Solstice occurs on the day when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, making it the longest day of the year. It is an ancient, spiritual tradition to celebrate on this day of the year and at SHARE hosted a special event to celebrate the beauty of the great outdoors.

Event Details:

The celebrations took place on Trannish Island, a beautiful island on Upper Lough Erne which SHARE owns a part of. Out on the island we own a Bothy, which was an old house that was recently restored, and a campfire. The island is full of natural beauty and is a peaceful get away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

To get out to the island, everyone paddled out on canoes, some rafted by families for stability. This was the prefect night for an evening paddle as the sun was shining, the water was calm and it was warm.

Out on the island, Gary, one of our staff members, had a tasty BBQ prepared for everyone to tuck in to. Everyone was treated to a burger, hot dog and a variety of salads and pastas.

The main attraction of the Summer Solstice celebrations was getting to see the breath-taking sunset on Upper Lough Erne on the longest day of the year! On the return paddle we got to see the sun setting whilst out in the middle of the lough – as you can see from the photos, we could not have asked for a more majestic sunset!

Family / Kids Activities

When on the island, everyone had a few hours to chill out and enjoy the peaceful surroundings while enjoying a delicious BBQ.

Kids were then sent on a scavenger to hunt around the island to find a variety of items including different types of leaves, trees and landmarks.

Everyone also got the chance to toast marshmallows and makes smores around the camp fire.
